You shouldn't be changing for a partner, nor should you try to change your partner. On top of that, you should be upfront about the kind of person you are, and the kind of relationship you want. If any of that isn't clear, chances are it's gonna be a bumpy road.

What I've done for birthdays that overlap with holidays is that for smaller holidays (Like valentines), we just celebrate it a few days to a week after the birthday. It also means that we can just get the discounted candy and hangout for a while, instead of spending extra money to have everything on valentines day. That usually means you can get extra candy if it's discounted too

Honesty my trick is, i NEVER approach a conversation like im attempting to flirt and I never assume they are flirting with me. Seriously, if you're at some kind of gathering, whether it be a bar, a club, a friends house, or something interest related like a board game store, if you see someone who catches your eye, first off, if its just "damn they attractive" dont go for it because that is a terrible conversation starter and honestly if i have reaslistic standards, there are lots of attractive people out there, that really shouldn't be enough to grab your interest anyway. If you see someone who for whatever reason, grabs your interest because say, they are interested in something you are too, or maybe they are talking about something that you find interesting even if its not something you yourself have tries to get into. Honestly hobbies and interests are always the best conversation starters in my experience.

Other than that, approach the conversation like this is a person i want to learn more about, NOT I want to date them and DEFINITELY not I want to sleep with them. The best relationships start out as friends anyway. Let things develope naturally. The whole idea of a being "friend zoned" such BS. If you are friendzoned its not because you missed your shot, its because she wasnt interested on you from the start. And its NOT a bad thing! You gained a friend, and through that friend you will probably make more friends who you might hit it off with in a more romantic way.

Honestly dating culture here in the US is so annoying. People tend to be very rigid about how things should be done. Like there is a bunch of unspoken rules and it makes the whole thing way more akward than it needs to be.
