Serious comment… I’m a service dog user and service dogs definitely know that they have a job to do and when they are off and on duty. For my dog that mental shift of focus happens when I put on her vest. Her whole demeanor shifts. She doesn’t play with her toys while she has her vest on, and stays close to me no matter what. She’s incredibly focused and walks with a sense of pride, confidence and purpose. But when the vest is off, she lounges around at home, plays hard with her toys, and listens to me for the most part 😂 I’ve learned a bit about how police K9s are trained and it’s a little different from service dogs. They train the K9s to treat work like a game and when they complete it, they get a reward. So the training is quite upbeat and energetic. A service dog has to be slower and much more deliberate in their actions. Both take a very special temperament of dog to be successful. And ultimately, the dog will decide if it doesn’t want to work anymore. The day my dog doesn’t get excited to put on her vest means she’s ready to retire. But right now she is loving life as a working dog. 🐕‍🦺

It never ceases to amaze the sheer quantity, variety and quantity of this guy's material. Josh is on his way to becoming one of the greats.

@JanetCarter-p1s

Josh. You are an absolute amazing human. So love your spin on life. You’re the best ❤

@Muryxkitteh

Those “treats” explain why Police Dog don’t know about naps. 🤪🤪💨💨🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️😵‍💫

@ManyfiresWoman

House dog to police dog:
"What kind of treats do you get? Mostly cocaine." 😅

@Voodoofairy88

They definitely know the difference between work & off hours. I have 2 semi-retired police dogs & they're awesome...but they definitely need to be kept entertained more than a typical dog.
By "semi-retired" I mean they've been retired from patrol but my property backs up to a state park. Unfortunately fire, rescue, ems out here is all volunteer & the Sheriffs Department only has 1 canine. So when there's a lost hiker or other emergency situation where they need more dogs we still do that.

@K10House

I worked at an animal hospital that boarded and cared for police and sheriff's department dogs. They're so intense that the people trained to walk them would have to call out loudly & repeatedly, "Police dog!" so that anyone in the hallway would know to calmly recede into a doorway so has not to induce a chase response. Many more stories about their intensity.

@donnaferreira2006

I'm 62 and LOVE YOU JOSH , from the facial expressions and your very calm way of saying the real effin truth 😂

@BrittnyOBrien

This is like being an adult and sharing stories about how you grew up ... and ... umm....oooh, we did not all grow up the same. lol

@alexisb.8965

I genuinely do love a pup in uniform 😂 they look so professional in their little vests

@sarahmiller9188

I see a couple with service dogs and what not being the “um actually” as well. Just fun factoid really but they absolutely know they have a job. I’ve trained search and rescue dogs for 20 years and they know what each harness and leash means and the bag of gear we grab for which terrain etc. it shocked me too the first time I watched a dog get serious. It’s like she knew this was life and death and not training this time. It took one real deployment to catch on. All the months of training and such and one real deployment, she just knew it was different this time, and first actual rescue, she learned she was looking for desperate people. Every dog I’ve trained will get impatient and upset if their handlers move too slow. We just don’t deserve them. 😭

@NedInYaHead

Best/worst part is that dogs are crazy good at telling all sorts of information about where they've been and what they've been up to by smelling each other's ass, it's like a social media status. A house dog would go up to police dog and be like... Damn. You really live like this?

@ivyrose779

This reminds me of hearing about the 9/11 search dogs getting depressed because they were only finding dead people so some of the volunteers hid so the dogs could find a live person every once in a while.

@mmmcounts

Police dogs have a good situation, to be honest. Most dogs spend a fair amount of time at home in an empty house, and maybe there's another pet to hang out with, but most dogs really like being around their humans. Police dogs have the on-job rapport with the officer that they're assigned to, and usually the dog goes home with a particular officer and they get lots of attention off the job too. They absolutely know when they're on the job vs off, it's a whole different experience.

@seriamaugenlicher

"I love a pup in uniform".😂

@ColleenScott-m2v

"I love a pup in uniform..."🤣😂🤣😂

@lmcsquaredgreendale3223

He's hilarious. I never would have thought twice about what a working dog feels. What I've seen is they love to work but it does beg the question does it please them or do they do it to please their owners or trainers.
