Full stack developer and UX Designer here. Move the entire menu column off the edge of the screen and allow a portion of the background to be seen on the opposite side of the column. Have the selection box only appear on hover. Make the selection box around the selection wider and taller. Have the bottom and top of the box almost brush up against the other selections. Have the width go almost to the edge of the column. Have the box do a double click style flash on selection. Remove the shift animation. Pick a text that is highly readable to be honest the blander the better. Menu items need to be as clear as possible. For your logo location have it only contain the text from your logo do not put the whole game logo in. You want your game to be professional. Not an RPG maker goon game.
