@CosmicPhilosopher

I started watching this and by the end of the first ep, I knew I couldn't stop. This series blew me away.

@atomicslpinterz5884

Stephen Graham needs an Oscar for his performance in this he really is a criminally underrated actor.

@shadowdragon-e7m

I'd never heard anything about it, just watched it out of curiosity. I'm very glad I did it was brilliantly done.

@lisaboban

"You just need to do better stuff."
I would also say "You need to do human stuff."
Good stories tell us who we are.

@MrDanlancelot

100% think that they will take the wrong lesson and we'll see half a dozen shows about incels shot in a single take (but without any of the actual meaningful commentary or powerful performances)

@mistercohaagen

It was insanely great... I couldn't believe the camera and sound work. The acting was devastatingly real.

@suudsuu

No lie, when I first saw Stephen Graham made this, my mind just went "Oh snap, isn't that Tommy from Snatch?" and then a torrential flood of all the movies and projects I've seen him in, but just didn't register until now came pouring in. The man has been EARNING his way.

@edwardnoble9897

I can't remember who told me about it, but there was definitely a buzz around it and I'm so glad I watched it without knowing anything. What a masterpiece it was. I initially thought the "oner" was going to be a gimmick and faked a lot (like usual), but it worked really well and when I realized it was actually one take it blew me away on a technical level too... Omg that drone shot! Best thing I've seen in a long time. Simply amazing (and brave) writing and acting!

@The482075

So main lesson: More low budget productions that are well made. Doesn't matter the genre.

@EileenHall-j9f

It’s like watching a play, not suitable for a cinema. It’s intimate, harrowing, you can pause when it’s too much to bear. At 77, I’m British and it’s definitely one of the best things I’ve seen. The acting was phenomenal, I didn’t appreciate the technical aspects, or the music, which was so moving. I’m glad it didn’t attempt to give answers, only to ask questions, to open up a dialogue. I do believe that this was so good was it because it was British. This was stagecraft at its best.

@jankopransky2551

Sorry Steve, not gonna finish watching this vid. I am on my way to watch the show RN, thanks to you.

@cliftonchurch6039

Word of mouth is a completely acceptable marketing strategy for inexpensive arthouse projects. It's the same in every entertainment media. Last year in the video game realm, a small indie game called Balatro came out. The game developer said in interviews after the game took off in popularity that they only expected to sell a handful of copies, but thanks to word of mouth, this game with a good gameplay loop that isn't too long but still feels fun to play became a serious contender for many Game of the Year awards,

Make art. Good art will thrive with word of mouth. Bad art needs marketing.

@thetruerift

Streaming is actually the perfect place for what used to be lower-budget films. Cinemas are now too expensive for most people to go see anything that doesn't kinda need big screen/big sound, but this is the perfect sort of thing for Streaming, because the costs can be kept low and the audience can find it on their own.

More support for stuff like this.

@AndrewMcColl

One big reason this show's been a success is the topic is highly relevant to our current point in society. Once it was being discussed in the UK parliament it was guaranteed to be a success. It does feel like they should be encouraging parents to watch the series more than their kids, however. Many kids already know how dangerous online content can be.

@misanthropicmusings4596

Don't forget transitioning to a drone shot !!! Very cool. As I was watching the first episode, I noticed what seemed like a lot of tracking shots, than my daughter told me, apparently each episode had been shot in one take, or something like that. Stephen Graham was great, but I also want to shout out Ashley Walters, whom I hadn't seen since Top Boy (his character in Adolescence is polar opposite), and Erin Doherty.

@allonszenfantsjones

oof. I saw the title of your video and backtracked, found "adolescence", sat down and watched the whole thing in one afternoon, with breaks. you're spot on: there's so much well meaning garbahge out there, just basically work for the industry, when something this good comes along we sit up and go 'what have I been wasting my time on?' seriously, if it doesn't pass the smell test, walk away.

@matrixphotodesign

For me the really cool thing was that there was no Hollywood ending , kinda like real life I think thats what made it so compelling.

@jpwphoenix1701

Being British myself, I know that a ton of the success of the series (at least in the U.K) comes from the subject matter. There’s so much knife crime, especially among young people, but also the ever-growing problem of Incels, toxic-masculinity and influencers like the Tate brothers. That’s why it’s being taken so seriously and discussed so much, with even our own Prime Minister not only watching it with his kids but organising meetings with relevant organisations/people to see what can be done to change things in real life and tackle these problems. He’s even now arranged for it to be shown in schools across the country, so it can be worked on and discussed with teens. But, I totally agree with what you said. We’ve had a lot of these low-budget, gritty crime dramas for decades and they’d normally be shown on regular TV channels. I think that it’s helped a lot with it being dropped on Netflix and shown globally. As you said, it’s meant a lot more people have not only been watching it but discussing it and posting about it online too.

@davidmylchreest3306

People like watching real, believable, relatable people on TV, and that's what this gets right. I suspect Netflix will take the wrong lessons from this. All they know is their algorithm, and all the algorithm will see is "British Crime Drama", "Topical Subject".
Unfortunately, British television is going through a funding crisis right now and it's extremely difficult to get things made. Adolescence is the sort of show that would have been made by the BBC or Channel 4 a few years ago. Last year's Baby Reindeer would have been a perfect show for Channel 4.
Stephen Graham has another British drama, The Walk-In on Netflix right now, about British Neo-Nazis, which was an excellent ITV drama and I would recommend checking out.

@Mister_Rosco_to_you

Word of mouth recommendations will also see your subscriber count soar even more, Steve. I'm a native Scot and I love your content, whether it be the comic book stuff, your politics, your general outlook and attitude, and your humour. I've recommended your channel to several friends, and every time you drop a video I click on it as soon as I see it pop up..., and I'm subscribed to around a hundred YouTube channels! I was in the pub yesterday with colleagues after work. During the chat I recommended your name/channel. We also discussed Adolescence. And this was before I was even aware that you had dropped a video about the same show... ya spooky bastard!

Adolescence was a profoundly great work of art. It moved me in so many ways. The writing, the acting, the subject matter, the amazing directing, and the (what I would have previously thought impossible) cinematography. Outstanding!

Now give us your thoughts on the new Supes "Sneak Peek" from DC and James Gunn. Pleeeeeeeease!
