I didn’t realize this until I watched Tehsnakerer’s retrospective on Yakuza 4, but he noted that the first three parts of Yakuza 4 centering around Akiyama, Saejima, and Tanimura are just remixes of the first three Yakuza games. Akiyama’s chapter follows a mysterious girls that appears following a shooting. She’s connected to a large sum of money and is being hunted by the Yakuza. She’s also a stranger and has a connection to someone from the protagonist’s past. That’s Yakuza 1. Saejima’s chapter follows the ripple effects from a shooting 2 decades prior and how it affected a previously unmentioned faction. That’s the plot of Yakuza 2. In Tanimura’s chapter, he’s discovering a plot of corruption from a public office that’s spilling over the yakuza, with the mystery revolving around a dead father figure. That’s the plot of Yakuza 3. After Bae finishes 4, I suggest watching his three part video on Yakuza 4. It’s worth a watch.
