I like to think the abyss is a living entity. It works like a trap plant. The treasure is the colorful flower, and the curse is like the sticky insides, preventing victims from escaping. The deeper you go, the harder it is to get out.
I noticed something about the abyss. The curse acts like diving sickness in some way, which i find neat. And it also stretches time, if i remember correctly. Time inside passes quicker, than outside. So messages take forever to reach the surface. And due to the curse, at some point yout cant escape anymore and have no other way than to go deeper. Almost like a black hole after you pass the event horizon.
There aren't that many animes that are brutally imaginative, but Made in Abyss sometimes make me feel like I'm reading lore from obscure 80s grimdark sci-fi that's only known by a small group of hardcore fans
Side notes about the Abyss: Machines like Reg are not affected by the curse, which lets Ref traverse through the Abyss with relative ease. Reg seems to originate from beyond Layer 7, which Riko’s mother mentions that she saw something resembling him at layer 6/7 (forgot) Other machines similar to Reg also appear in the series, which suggests that the civilisation that built them is highly advanced Something happens to the Abyss once every 2000 years or so, it is currently theorised it sucks in neighbouring islands/surface layer into the Abyss
what I love most about this universe is we know more about the secrets of the abyss than we do their world
It feels like time dialation has an effect on the curse. Since a day deep can be a century on the surface, then naturally going in doesn't affect delvers, but going back up makes you catch up on all the years physiologically.
so i watched like 4 minutes of the video, then thought to myself "ive never watched anything about this and this would probably spoil everything...." so i started watching the anime yesterday.... its now 5am... ive watched it all, ive cried a lot.... i want more. its just beautiful
Videos like this is why we need a star rating system back. This deserves 5/5 stars, not worthless likes.
For most of the artifacts we don't know which layer they originate from. Just because an artifact was first mentioned on a certain layer does not mean it originates there.
I absolutely LOVE that there is no AI voice. Good video, man
The deeper you go the worse the Abyss Curse gets. Returning from the bottom of Layer 2 is a lot easier than returning from the bottom of Layer 3. Riko could have still turned back with Reg after meeting Ozen as the Curse is still realistically endurable. Layer 3 good luck climbing up while hallucinating. To return from Layers 4&5 require superhuman toughness. Layers 6&7 I wonder how many years they have been down there already, there's no turning back for anyone effected by the curse.
love the none ai voice. hearing him restart the script after messing up was very refreshing from the perfect robotic voices
What I HOPE is at the bottom: A tunnel leading out of the abyss via the other side of the planet without suffering the effects of the curse. Either that, or something that makes a person immune to the curse and allows them to ascend back out of the abyss with no ill effects. Maybe even a way to end the curse for the whole abyss. What I think is ACTUALLY at the bottom: Either nothing at all, or an eldritch horror beyond comprehension. At the very least, Riko's mother will be there. But she will either be dead or no longer human. In any case, the protagonists will either die at the bottom or be forced to remain and suffer there forever. But no matter what happens, Riko will be able to find a small amount of happiness in the fact that she reached the bottom of this abyss that no one else did (except her mother) and that she found her mother, especially if her mother is alive in some form.
The abyss is my favorite world in any anime, and a big reason is how detailed a flushed out it is. It's to me its own character. I also love how the idea of equivalent exchange was always present. We just didn’t think of it like that until we got to the second season. As each layer has a more defined term of this idea, the deep you go, the more knowledge you gain, but you can't leave in exchange, or there also curse and blessing idea (nanachi and mitty ect..) It's so cool to see that basically all the effects of the abyss are rooted in the same principle just applied in different ways. It's such a small detail that enchances the world building even more.
ok, so anyone agree that the abyss is a living creature? given the most recent chapters, it might be sitting inverted, as in: 1st layer- the excretorial system, leading to the surface 2nd layer - the big intestines, complete with plant bacteria inside 3rd layer - small intestines, long and thin 4th layer - stomach, given its wide, filled with sometimes corrosive liquid that gathers in pools 5th layer - i cant place this one, maybe the lungs or the throat. it is cold and dead, cant say which one it fits with 6th layer - mouth (that can open). warm, lighted, volcanic explosions that probably happen when the mouth ”opens” 7th layer - is described as having eyes. probably the head/face. if there's an 8th layer, it'll probably be the brain.
Made in Abyss is the closest any anime got to Lovecraftian horror. I only wish the manga would finish already so I can read it all instead of waiting for the anime seasons.
the 2nd season regarding how faputa came into existence and the cradle of desire is literal eldritch nightmare fuel. that whole season I'd argue is more morbid than the movie with bondrewd & the cartridges.
Can you do a video for all creatures explained in Made in Abyss?
I'm happy that someone covered all these layers in a video. Out of all the anime I've seen, Made in Abyss always had me infatuated with it's Layer system. It gets more creepy the deeper you go. It's so exciting to see. 👏 I really wan to see the 7th Layer in an anime.
