I prefer DiMarzios over any aftermarket pickup. Not to badmouth Duncans, but the DiMarzios just sound better to my ears. Plus DiMarzio's been in the game longer than anyone else when it comes to making aftermarket pickups so it's safe to say they know what they're doing. As a bonus, DiMarzio is usually less expensive than the competition. An EMG 81 costs 100 bucks while a D-Activator is 70 plus you don't have to worry about the extra work of converting your guitar to use actives if it was already setup for passives.
um which guitar had which pickup?
I can't believe you recorded this with a mobile phone. it sounded clear enough!
Both sound excellent! Be happy with either one.
Dimarzio d activators sound better and more organic IMO.
I like the D-Activator. It still sounds alive. Emg's and other actives just sound too sterile and cold.
The Blackouts sound fucking awesome! \m/
Dunno what you went for, but I personally have a preference for passive. I use pedals and my pedal board does allow me to simply plug into any clean channel on any amp and play with as near my own tone and applicable volumes. My main axe is a rebuilt Ibanez Roadstar Series II with a D-Activator X in the bridge (still saving my pennies for the matching neck). With passive you can control the volume as easily as how hard you pluck the string (or volume control - remove mud with a treble bleed).
the marshall mg10 sounds quite alright for the size and prize, i'm surpised to be honest! and for the pickups, i think the passives have more chunk and heaviness to them, but the blackouts sound a bit more clear and have a bit more punch, i'd prefer passive ones with a good (ground) wiring, it takes away a lot of the white noise passive ones sometimes have. also nice playing dude!
Is it just me, or does the D Activator do a really good job at capturing the old school Metallica guitar tone from when they were using Seymour Duncan pickups?
If you like the convenience and cracking sound of passive pickups, especially with your playing style wich demands a little crunch and fatness, you should also try the Seymour Duncan Invader. I once searched for the perfect bridge pickup and i left actives where I found them (in other guitars). remember, especially if you do some recording, the rule for your gain is = less is more. also, if you ever have the chance, try the active blackouts singlecoil for neck position. it's not for everybody, but to me, it was just GREAT.
D Activator sounds awesome!
That's what I'm thinking, but the only thing is that the actives have a little more power. This is only a 10 watt amp, though, so the passives would sound much more powerful on my Switchblade.
Shortest Straw, Blackened, Through the never...dud! excellent choice!! these are the perfect songs to demonstrate the chuginess, punch and clarity of a high gain humbucker, Dimarzio rules!
I don't know... I mean, I only use it as a small backup when the tube amp quits and I'm pretty sure there are better small amps out there. I haven't played enough different models to really have an opinion or advice.
as a rhythm-only player you should be perfectly fine with emg's, especially the 81. dimarzios are more for soulful solos and nice clean sounds, i never liked the heavy distorted rhythm sound of passives. gonna try the emg 57/66 combo when i get the money, they sound proimsing to me
This video sold me on putting a D’activator in my Eclipse! What neck pickup are you using?
