I just wanted to say thanks for the videos Mike. I've had a very stressful year and your content is a source of much comfort for me.
Horror with good stories made me instantly think of Dan Simmons. His horror and science fiction works are both excellent.
I plan to read both the Road and Something Wicked This Way Comes this year!
I totally agree with you on Swan Song (the apple tree was just magical) - and I love The Stand also!
Loved seeing Let the Right One In on here!
Another great video Mike. For me, Salem’s Lot was my first Stephen King book, and it is still my favorite. It rocked my world as a 13 year old (back in 1978), and is still my favorite horror novel 47 years later.
Stephen King has so many. What makes his horror books so great is the themes they typically have. In fact, I think horror is usually secondary for most of his horror books. One I highly recommend is Pet Sematary. It has great horror, but is also the best book about grief that I’ve ever read.
Great video!! I’m actually going to save it in my Notes app, as you’ve reminded me of a couple of books I’d forgotten that I’ve always wanted to read!! Additionally, I found a first edition of Heart Shaped Box at my local Dollar Tree some years back. What a fantastic find!! Secondly, a very long time ago I’d read most of Anne Rice’s books. I was browsing my favorite book store and saw a boxed 3 book set titled (I think) The Sleeping Beauty Trilogy by her and bought it on the spot without even checking what the books were about…WOW!! I was so shocked by just the beginning of book one that I had to just stop and put it back into its case. Shame on me for blind buying!! 😳🙈
Great choices my friend. I remember the first time that I read The Exorcist in high school. Still to this day it's the scariest book that I've ever read.
Thanks Mike - I’m knee deep in horror books thanks to you. Really enjoying Joe Hills writing !! Finishing The Fireman and then I may hop into Heart Shaped Box next
I'm not a horror reader myself. Most of the "horror" I've read crosses over into other genres, like sci-fi, fantasy, thriller, and even romance. So, I'm a big fan of Dean Koontz and have occasionally read Robert McCammon and did read a few Anne Rice novels. One short story that was a horror to me that I read many, many moons ago was Harlan Ellison's I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. Very visceral reaction. Did read I Am Legend, The Exorcist, Jaws, The Stand though.
Joan Samson - The Auctioneer... It is a another great social horror story set in a small town in which a stranger comes and disrupts everything. I know, it's a trope BUT as a sociologist I had to put it down several times because the story of the dissolution of family and neighbourly bonds in the novel is so spot on, it got to me.
I have read some classic horror books but it has been hit and miss for me with modern horror. I may be adding a few of these to my TBR list, especially Black box and Heart-Shaped Box. Thanks!
Appreciate the shout out for Something Wicked and Heart-Shaped Box. Excellent choices! Along these lines, I'd suggest two books by Thomas Tryon: "The Other" and "Harvest Home". Great stories with a lot of tension.
I’m actually a big horror fan and really it’s my main genre of choice when it comes to literature but, I will agree it is schlock sometimes but in general it just seems to me like horror novels and movies just give me the most joy no matter what tropes are constantly regurgitated over and over
Folks here would probably like Brian Lumley's Necroscope series. I usually don't like vampire theme but this was very interesting world building. Thank you, Mike, for bringing these book reviews to us. I like your succinct, thoughtful critiques and cool T-shirts.😊
Great video!!! Huge horror movie and book fan here! Stephen King is my fav author and I’m finally gonna read IT at 36 years old for the first time next month in preparation for the upcoming “Welcome To Derry”Show. Also I already wanted to read Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill,Boys In The Valley Phillip Fracassi and Black Mouth by Ronald Malfi but you pushed me to read them even sooner!
Great video, as always, Mike! I needed a primer in great stories and characters in one place.
Need to get to more of these... I didn't think I was much of a horror fan, but I've been coming around to it with some of your recommendations. McCammon hasn't really missed for me, and Malfi is on my radar.
