Messaging application where recipient doesn’t know they have a message unless they open the app is not very useful. I tried Session on iOS about 12 months ago - message notifications didn’t work. Tried it again today- same issue. Neither text nor voice calls get received by the recipient unless they have the app open. Element on the other hand doesn’t have this problem.
