Hey bookworms! I wanted to make the amendment that I was wrong about the “recently” deleted 1984 from Kindle devices. That was awhile back and Amazon admitted their mistake. My fault!

@caseyknolla8419

I'm really glad that this is getting the backlash it deserves. As a software engineer and a strictly digital reader, I've never liked the sleazy restrictions that Amazon put on their ebooks, but at least there was a way to strip them of those restrictions. Now with this change, I refuse to buy another ebook from Amazon and will never own another kindle.

@sebastianvicewriter

Easy solution to all of this. As an owner of a small press, we sell ebooks direct from our site. The silver lining for small presses and indie authors: sell direct from your website! I’m with you on the ebook price from the big boys. Outrageous. Great video, as always, Mike. Long time lurker of your channel.

@Uppernorwood976

There are a few cases where piracy is morally acceptable. Downloading a pirated version of an ebook you’ve already bought on Kindle is definitely one of them. You are not taking anything you haven’t already paid for, and you are not depriving anyone else from owning it.

“We expected to banish paper, but we actually banished thought…”

@takethatnextstep

I am now only buying ebooks from kobo. I am also buying the Kobo Libra Color - I am keeping all my various kindles but no longer downloading new books to them.

I did download my 1200 ebooks off of Amazon so Yeah, another customer lost to Amazon. We are only a drop in the bucket, but if enough of us stop buying from them maybe they might notice.

By the way, my first Kobo purchase last week was Fahrenheit 451. 😂

@Joint.n.Hollow

Paying for a membership for kindle plus buying books for full price just to be told you don’t own it is crazy. I bought. Kobo and I love it. The buttons and the little bit of color. It’s perfect congrats on yours

@JoeKueser

If I'm buying a license rather than owning the book, why does it cost as much or more than the physical book? Often the paperback is cheaper. That makes zero sense. That fact inched me away from Kindle. Being told I couldn't download pushed me over the edge. My Kobo Libra Colour arrived on February 26, the same day Amazon cut me off. Also leaning back to physical books, with a new Barnes & Noble opening nearby soon. Cutting Amazon off wherever I can. I used to love them for their customer service, but they clearly don't care.

@timcook110

Long live physical media and the freedom and benefits it offers!!

@EvilNatured

Agree across the board. . My anger only grew over the tedious hours I spent downloading all my purchased books by the deadline.

@Penske30

I bought a Kobo in response to the latest Kindle shenanigans for all of the reasons you’ve touched on. I love it especially compared to my latest Kindle device which was the Paperwhite purchased when my Oasis died. What do I love? Buttons,baby, buttons. I’d forgotten how much I missed them! Great episode as usual. Thanks

@bradykathol8806

Kobo libra color absolutely crushes the kindle in my mind so much more function and it just feels good to use I love mine

@ulrika44

I’ve had Kobo for 3 years now. Haven’t tried any other device, but I don’t need to since I love my Kobo. I’m in Sweden and Kindle didn’t offer the “free” books here so it was a no brainier.
I do buy books in the middle of the night, no pants.
And also, their library is getting better and better. Found lots of indie and self published book lately, so they are evolving.
Good luck with yours!

@daniboi79

Wow. Why am I paying full book prices for a rental🧐🤨. That is a great perspective!

@Cristy-nn9pb

I agree with everything you said. Going back to physical books. Will buy them from everywhere except Amazon

@danielsell7598

I have two Paperwhites and had no intention of getting a new e-reader….until recently. I downloaded all my Kindle books before 2/26/25 and purchased a Kobo.

@RekindledReader

Looking forward to the Libra Colour review.

@Penguin2923

This is part of why physical media matters - Books, DVDs, Blu-Rays and so on. I have never been an e-reader guy, so this wasn't a problem for me; but in recent years I have made a point to buy DVDs for more obscure movies (which streamers can remove at any point of time) and my all-time favorite films/TV shows. You shouldn't be at the mercy of Jeff Bezos or Musk or Zuckerberg about getting to enjoy what you want.
Amazon's services have become really terrible - I've lost count of how many times I have ordered a book (mostly textbooks) that turned out to be a shitty quality print on demand book that bleeds through when you write on it. Just terrible stuff.

@alannapenner37

Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the Libre Colour! I've been a ride or die Kobo reader for about a decade and one of the big reasons is that Kindle doesn't support library loans in Canada but Kobo does. Kobo is actually owned by the same company as Libby, so they're big library supporters, which I love. I have my eye on the Libra Colour, just saving up for it!

@destro6971

I’ll do ebooks through Libby and my local library, otherwise the sound of a groaning bookshelf is my happy place.
