I live and work in DC. There're plenty of very bright, extremely hardworking federal employees and contractors. There's also a few that stroll in at 10 a.m., take 2-hour lunch breaks, and then leave for the day at 2 p.m. If you ask these types to do anything work-related, they'll report you to HR for harassment.
I agree with your take on Institutions. Commitment to institutions rather than the outcomes
IF it is true that they wanted Rogan to fly to her, and limit it to an hour, it just further reinforces how out of touch the staff was with the population more broadly - and Rogan.
Dems shut the door on Bernie twice. And now here we are.
Finally some real introspection of the problem of the current administrative state
Well, the PEOPLE are very excited about RFK’s appointment — according to yesterday’s Pew Poll ( with approximately 70% approving—especially suburban women )….
Bill Clinton...as a woman I groaned when the Harris campaign trotted him out. WTF....
They need to go out to Iowa or Michigan or Ohio and talk to a roofer or a truck driver or a waitress. They'll tell you exactly why you all lost.
In my house we're sane, pissed off, and not 🚫 accepting Stupid as the New Smart. Hope I'm still in it this time next year. Unfortunately I can't take it with me to some boring country run by grownups 😬
Don't allow revisionism of the covid pandemic. One of the main factors in lockdowns was the amount of infections, the countries that were hit the hardest locked down after the wave to save their healthcare systems, it was a response to circumstances. After the wave, meaning the likes of the UK had covid in December and locked down in March. Sweden, that didn't lockdown, had several times more deaths from covid than their neighbours who locked down, although they still had proportionally far less than the UK, Spain, France, Italy, or the US. Sweden also had almost all the negative effects associated with lockdowns that their neighbours had because it was behaviour driving it, not lockdowns. Any dense population centre is going to lockdown in a pandemic.
Wow, NYTs is still in business.
My left-leaning friends want to fix institutions by giving them more resources. I never hear these same friends talk about efficiency or accountability when it comes to government institutions. Plan > Leadership > Accountability > People > Resources
Code for America really gets in there and helps simplify procedures for those using tech and those applying on paper too. Kudos to them.
The way hiring is done is beyond stupid, you can interview people without asking political questions
“This (self id) breaks institutions, and specifically, it breaks them at their point of purpose. If an organisation was set up to educate, it starts to indoctrinate – to teach lies, and punish anyone who points out that they are lies. If it was set up to do safeguarding, it starts to work to increase the risks of harm and abuse for vulnerable people. If it was set up to promote free speech, it becomes a censor. If it was set up to support and strengthen women, it instead starts to sideline and put down women and promote men in their place.” Dr Helen Joyce, Genspect, “What Will It Take To Return To Reality?”
Lots to unpack here. Three points that go unnoticed: (1) for decades the GOP has done nothing to create better government - embracing instead a “do nothing” approach or institutional self-sabotage to further an agenda of outsourcing traditional public services to private donors, which enables (2) ongoing graft and crony capitalism - our national religion. (3) Look around. The federal workforce accomplishes so much more than is given credit - but we rarely notice, because the messaging focuses on negative stories, and we’re too busy blaming the poster child of low-output employees, who by the way exist in private sectors, too. No one can seem to explain what Trump’s tear-it-down-and-replace-with-loyalists approach will accomplish, other than some sort of temporary feel-good about laying off a bunch of employees and adding them to the unemployment rolls.
I love hearing you guys slice and dice in the same way the dem party splits hairs til there’s nothing useful remaining. People are broke or poor, they live hand to mouth. It’s the economy stupid.
Conservatives have been having this conversation for decades now, and now suddenly this is new and shocking to liberals.
When i worked in the government, it was a bunch of affirmative action hires who slept at their desk all day and did nothing. This was at the DEA. I’m really excited about the possibility of dramatically reducing the government workforce. We need to be able to get rid of low performers
