This is 100% why I watch you and not other dog trainers. I was watching another video of yours and you were talking about e-collars/ prong collars and you said something along the lines of ‘I know those of you watching don’t use these, or maybe your someone who does, your all welcome here’ - that was the point I knew you were an amazing teacher, no judgement but still holding strong on your beliefs and how you train. Absolute legend ❤
Honestly it can be challenging not to fall back into the old ways of training. When I was looking for a trainer last year for a very difficult puppy, I talked with a trainer who scared me. She said, I’ll whip your dog into shape and then flipped when I talked about positive reinforcement. Obviously I didn’t go to her. Sad part is lots of people recommended her. I guess I was judging, but she didn’t seem open to anything but her way. I’m glad I didn’t use her for the sake of my dog. My dog ended up having an underdeveloped brain that caused these behaviors. She got worse and we were devastated when we ended up having to put (9 month old puppy) her to sleep. She only had part of her brain and was becoming unpredictable and sadly she was in pain too. I have to say I started home school the dog and I was able to help her enjoy the short life she had. Thankfully I learned how to take her TEMP and see when she needed help. Lots of the games were great for her. German shepherd’s are really smart and have lots of energy and because she couldn’t move around like a normal GSD the games really helped. You could see she knew things weren’t right too. People need to be open to learning something different and also train the dog in front of you. I have had two other GSD in my life and I was very successful in training them. I could have easily gone down a path that would have been horrific for my baby girl.
This applies to so many other areas, too
My tolerance of being evaluated by someone who only used linear training, and thinking I do not understand shaping. I had to walk away.
Would like to know how you approach that now
