Would have been a no-brainer with M.2, but without M.2 I can wait.
This video was very informative and (if one reads between the lines) we can see where the upcoming iterations would have things like functional USB-c, separate power input, switchable antenna (maybe or maybe not), NvMe slot (although this adds a tremendous amount of heat to the already expansive heat sink module) and even more RAM. Now, about those HDMI micro cheesy ports ....
I've modded mine to run the M.2 SSD, and the speeds were similar to what you can get on pi5 with m.2 hat. Component in line with the RTC battery is probably low value resistor for overcurrent protection.

voltage regulators for M.2 are also missing, as are caps.
Good video. You have done a great job examining the whole board. It makes you wonder what they have planned. Maybe the board is designed for the Pi 600 or something? As in preparing for future generations of products?
What a missed opportunity. If they added a proper switch, M.2 socket + access flap, it would make the RPi500 an ideal school computer especially for UK primary schools. I just hope there is an RPi500v2 with all these features. I would suggest a screwed on cover over the GPIO port to deter little fingers from shorting out or breaking the RPi500!
Add the M.2 and they can take my money! // they could have more if there was 16gb…
It looks like they have a number of variants of the board in development, these may be sold through OEM channels rather than being mainstream RPi boards.
I'm extremely disappointed with the RPi 500. It took forever to come out, and obviously had been planned for big things, but.... The biggest complaint I had about the 400 was the inability to connect an SSD internally (and at full speed). That they planned making this possible but then cut the feature makes this a solid pass for me. Maybe there will be a Rev 2....
Use a hair dryer before you take things like that off.
