Just got off my Tik Tok binge and something clicked to me. I think the reason why Instagram’s sole purpose of only being a visual, photographic platform has become tired is literally because of that. Sure, it’s great to see artsy photography and pretty ig models but that’s literally it. It’s surface-level content that struggles to connect with its users. I go on Twitter to hear about people’s days, peoples wins, people’s losses - it’s what makes it so funny because you get glimpses of other people’s lives that isn’t to the degree of perfection IG tries to showcase. You learn about the INDIVIDUAL on Twitter, not just seeing a whole feed of their pretty faces and perfect bodies. Same with Tik Tok. Everytime I go on it, I learn about art, I learn about videography, I learn about a city’s history, I learn about psychology. The people that are on Tik Tok (other than the tik tok stars and dancers) are genuinely passionate people. I think we all just crave a sense of connection and hearing about what people love is what we take more interest in rather than some photo dump of your “seemingly” perfect trip to Europe. Collectively, we all just want something deeper. We’ve been deprived for connection for a whole year and Twitter and Tik Tok users emulate that by sharing their thoughts and viewpoints that we all connect with. EDIT: Not to mention that IG is literally just advertisement after advertisement, which doesn’t help their superficial purpose. Whereas we probably let ads slide on Tik Tok because the content that follows is something that adds value to our lives.

VSCO should really try to take advantage of this because I think if they tried to market the app towards more people and associated less with the "VSCO girl" stereotype, they could become a viable replacement for instagram.
