For the beginning, going left is faster than the right, because it is a straight shot to the barrels. The right side is too wide of a turn. When killing the enemies on the stairs, get up closer and shoot the wall next to the stairs. If you're close enough, the second wave of enemies won't spawn, allowing you to destroy the tanks sooner.
