on today’s edition of plantguessr, we’ll be learning about the beautiful coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) seen at 0:03. they naturally occur along the coast in northern california and max southwest oregon. these stunning trees are some of the longest living trees on earth, with lifespans of over 2000 years. one adaptive strategy that contributes to this species’ long lifespan is their unique method of capturing coastal fog. when fog condenses on the specialized leaves of these trees, some of it is absorbed through the leaves, and some of it drips down onto the forest floor into their roots. this ensures that these redwoods have enough moisture to make it through the drier summer months where fog is frequent but rainfall is not. this mechanism also allows redwood forests to produce enough moisture to support a variety of understory plants, like the various fern species we can see in this location.

trevor’s guesses, yosemite national park and tahoe national forest, indicate that he mistook coastal redwoods for a different iconic redwood species: the giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum). these trees occur in central california along the sierra nevada mountain range. giant sequoias are the largest trees on earth with an average height of about 160-280 feet and trunk diameters ranging from 20-26 feet. they are some of the longest living organisms on earth, capable of living over 3000 years.
