Indian strikes on Pakistan Tuesday night into early Wednesday have sparked new concerns about another war in the region in a longstanding and bitter conflict after a terrorist attack in India flared tensions between the two countries again.

India’s Defense Ministry said the strikes targeted at least nine sites where it said terrorist attacks against India had been planned. The strikes had been anticipated in response to an attack on India last month where gunmen killed 26 people in India-controlled Kashmir, a long-disputed territory between the nuclear-armed neighbors that New Delhi has blamed on Islamabad. The April 22 attack on tourists was the deadliest against civilians since the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Indian has described the military action as “measured, responsible and designed to be nonescalatory in nature,” but also included a strike inside mainland Pakistan for the first time in more than 50 years.
