A fundraising project to restore a historic steam locomotive in Butte is officially underway.

The Engine 25 Restoration Project is being led by a group of Butte residents passionate about preserving history.

Engine 25 was built in 1899 and assisted trains over the steep grade of Homestake Pass until 1958.

Now located in the Civic Center parking lot, it is one of the few surviving Northern Pacific steam engines remaining but has suffered wear and tear due to the elements and is in need of a new fencing and protective covering, among other things.
