Jaishankar engages with Taliban’s FM in first official contact

8804 77________

India on Thursday welcomed Afghanistan’s firm rejection of attempts to sow distrust between the two nations, in a phone conversation between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. This marks their first publicly acknowledged conversation and comes amid false reports in Pakistani media alleging India "hired" the Taliban for a false flag operation in Pahalgam.

Jaishankar appreciated Kabul’s condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack and reiterated India’s commitment to supporting Afghanistan’s development needs. The two leaders discussed enhancing diplomatic ties, facilitating visas for Afghan patients and traders, and streamlining the return of Afghan prisoners held in India. They also emphasised the strategic importance of the Chabahar Port.
