In the year 2000, Danish-Chilean artist Marco Evaristti shocked the world with an art installation called Helena, displayed at the Trapholt Museum of Modern Art in Denmark. The installation featured 10 working blenders, each filled with water and a live Green Swordtail fish. Visitors were left with a disturbing choice: walk away—or press the button and instantly end a life.

The work was meant to challenge viewers’ ethical boundaries and provoke questions about responsibility, control, and human desensitization to violence. But it caused massive public outrage when some visitors actually did turn on the blenders, killing the fish. Animal rights groups condemned the installation, and museum director Peter Meyer was even charged with animal cruelty—though later acquitted.

Evaristti defended his work by saying, "We all have choices. We can choose to kill, or we can choose to preserve life. That’s what the art is about."

To this day, Helena remains one of the most controversial examples of modern conceptual art.
