Assessing the Damage Bugs Killing the Douglas Fir Trees
In some areas of the west, massive numbers of Douglas fir trees are being killed by flat headed fir borers. These are not bark beetles, they are borers, but they act like bark beetles. I am assessing the damage to see how many they killed on my forest land this year. This area is not having the catastrophic bug kill like some areas, but enough to be concerning. Some of these are scattered and I am trying to decide if I want to bring my tractor in to each one to cut them down and salvage them. If I do, I would likely put the logs on my Woodmizer LT 15 sawmill to cut them into lumber.
