Fossil hunting in Keynsham

684 12________

Keynsham is great for fossils as the fields are filled with limestone rocks and are turned over every year by cultivation.

Rules for fossil hunting in fields:

1. make sure it’s not planted (no crops or seedlings).

2. Don’t take from intact walls. (The pieces in this video were ones I found about five years ago and placed on the wall for the next time I came. The only piece I took out of the wall was in a section that was scrapped due to a tree that had grown in it).

3. It’s always good to ask for permission from the land owner. Even though this was a public footpath I still made sure to get permission.

4. Try to leave it as you found it (of course excluding any fossils you collect). This means close gates that you opened and open gates that you closed. Try to keep the landscape looking natural so no digging or breaking walls.

5. If it’s a registered fossil site then you should check the SSSI rules (site of special scientific interest) which should be available online or if there is a local structure about the site (building/museum/sign). These can include no digging in bedrock, no cracking rocks or in the extreme cases no fossil hunting in which case you should ask the landowner for permission.
