While Rolex is widely credited with creating the first waterproof watch in 1926 with its Oyster model, waterproof watches date back earlier. In 1851, W. Pettit & Co. demonstrated a pocket watch submerged in water at the Great Exhibition in London, and American watchmaker Waltham Depollier introduced a waterproof military watch seven years before the Oyster. However, Rolex was the first to mass-produce a waterproof and dustproof model. Post-WWII, as scuba diving became popular, brands like Omega and Blancpain set the dive-watch standard with the Marine, Fifty Fathoms, and Submariner—now iconic models. Today, many wear these watches for style as much as utility.
