Hiking Mt. Williamson, CA, early September 2024

Summited my first 14er with Mt. Williamson (14,380ft) in the high Sierras.
Went with a good friend of mine, and it took us 3 days, with 29 miles and 10,000+ vertical. My siblings wanted me to vlog my trip, so here it is.

This was definitely one of the hardest yet most rewarding things I've done in my life, and it was incredibly taxing both physically and mentally. Big thank you to Joey, who we met along the way, who joined us for the end of the climb and helped us up a few of the tricky spots.

If you're trying to climb this mountain and are looking for a benchmark, I'm an active amateur hiker and cyclist, cycling 30 miles a week at sea level and hiking 8-12 miles and 3-4k vert a week around 4000 feet elevation. I'm not much of a climber or scrambler. This hike was doable, but absolutely pushed my limits and was barely possible.
I think our route was optimal, especially since both of us live close to sea level. Sleeping at the 10,300ft Anvil Camp as opposed to 12,000ft Shepherd Pass was better for us to acclimate, and then we dropped our stuff and did a brutal 14 hour hike with day packs, which was challenging but we didn't have to carry much and had the extra night of acclimation and less exhaustion from the previous day.
The trail is relatively straightforward until you get to Mt. Williamson Bowl. On a topographic map it doesn't look challenging, which is incredibly deceptive. It took us probably close to 8 hours to travel just 2-3 miles of the 11 mile second day, which involved bouldering, scrambling on very loose scree, and some class 4 scrambling towards the end. If you're comfortable with bouldering and climbing you'll probably be faster than we were on this part. I’d also recommend bringing a helmet, we didn’t have them and would have turned around if we weren’t the first ones up.
