The southwest monsoon advanced into parts of the south Bay of Bengal, south Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands, and some areas of the north Andaman Sea on Tuesday, according to the India Meteorological Department.

The strength and depth of westerly winds have also increased over these regions, which are expected to bring more rainfall in the coming days.

According to IMD officials, conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance further and it is likely to reach Kerala on May 27, earlier than the usual June 1 date.

If the monsoon arrives as expected, it will be the earliest onset over the Indian mainland since 2009.

The southwest monsoon typically arrives over Kerala by June 1 and covers the entire country by July 8, retreating from northwest India by September 17 and fully withdrawing by October 15.

Crucial for India’s agriculture, supporting 42% of the population, and contributing 18% to GDP, the monsoon also replenishes vital reservoirs for drinking water and power generation.
